What we do

Home-Start Tonbridge & Tunbridge Wells was begun in 1993 with our first volunteer preparation course being held in March.   We expanded our area into Malling in January 2000 and became Home-Start South West Kent.

We are part of a national organisation but Home-Start South West Kent is an independent charity based within the community.   Home-Start South West Kent is managed by a committee made up of local representatives from relevant agencies, and individuals with specialist skills.

Home-Start South West Kent provides a service, which is locally based with volunteers from the whole of South West Kent and in this way helps families to integrate with their community and all that the community offers.   Children, parents and the wider community all benefit from Home-Start South West Kent’s work.

The Home-Start service is sometimes more acceptable to families than Statutory Services.   The fact that a volunteer chooses to visit them helps a family to feel valued and has an immediate effect on their self-esteem.

Home- Start volunteers offer support and practical help to families in a sensitive and flexible way, offering families the opportunity to develop new relationships, ideas and skills.
